When a line manager is worried about the performance of a team member, the first question they should ask after how they are doing and whether anything may be impacting their work is whether they might require a workplace adjustment. Only after they have definitely and definitively ascertained that there is no workplace adjustment required can they progress any sort of performance management. This cannot be understated. Skip this step at your own peril. A tiny workplace adjustment can be the difference between a high-performing team member and a team member who is unable to perform.
